The Armenian Evangelical Shamlian Tatigian Secondary School, located in Bourj Hammoud, a suburb northeast of Beirut, Lebanon, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century.
Founding and Early Development
In 1930, the New Marash Armenian Evangelical School was established in the Nor Marash neighborhood of Bourj Hammoud. This area was predominantly inhabited by Armenians who had relocated from Cilicia and Anatolia following the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Initially, the school offered kindergarten and two elementary classes.
By 1936, under the leadership of Reverend Garabed Hassessian, the number of elementary classes expanded to six. Later, Reverend Aram Hadidian further developed the institution by adding four intermediate grades in 1950 and three secondary grades in 1958, enabling the school to offer a complete secondary education.
Expansion and Renaming
In 1964, significant contributions from Mr. and Mrs. J. Shamlian and their son, Mr. G. Tatigian, facilitated the construction of a modern school building. In recognition of their support, the institution was renamed the Armenian Evangelical Shamlian Tatigian Secondary School.
Present Day
Today, the school serves approximately 300 students across kindergarten, primary, and secondary levels. It continues to uphold its mission of providing quality education within a Christian Armenian framework, aiming to develop self-confident individuals capable of contributing positively to society.
The school’s compound also includes the Nor Marash Armenian Evangelical Church, reinforcing its role as a central institution within the local Armenian community.
Throughout its history, the Armenian Evangelical Shamlian Tatigian Secondary School has remained dedicated to its educational and cultural mission, adapting to the needs of its community while preserving its foundational values.
